Q10: What is an idol? The biggest problem for a true follower of Jesus, is dealing with "The SELF-POWERED principle that spoils salvation". Hosea 14:7 They that dwell under his shadow shall return; they shall revive as the corn, and grow as the vine: the scent thereof shall be as the wine of Lebanon.
When we grow under the covering shadow of God our sin-offering is not unto death, we grow as corn, wheat and grapes unto Jesus our Saviour. Such growing under God's shadow, is caused by the true follower having an abiding relationship with Jesus.
Notice the contrast, when self takes over:-
Hosea 14:8 Ephraim shall say, What have I to do any more with idols? ..
The Hebrew word idol here reads "the eye travels home", and also refers to pain or suffering...whatever the eye sees travelling home.
Psalms 106:36 And they served their idols: which were a snare unto them.
Psalms 115:4 Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands.
Hosea 13:2 And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver, and idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of the craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves.
Notice just from these few verses, idols are things the man sees with his eye that travels home into his soul, "and saves" making them feel happy, giving them hope and helping their life have purpose. Notice idols are technologies, things manmade that man uses for salvation.
Hosea 14:8 .. I have heard him, and observed him: I am like a green fir tree. From me is thy fruit found.
Our fruitfulness comes from GOD, the source of all power. If we are wise we shall understand these things.
Ho 14:9 Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein. (KJV)
The book of Salvation "Hosea" or "Yoshea" is a remarkable book explaining in chronlogical order the Science of Salvation, so a child could understand. Go and do, and be assured of the hope of salvation in Christ Jesus and His grace in you. Amen
