Affliction of servants, domestic abuse
( 1 ) Ge 15:13 And he said unto Abram , Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict "`anah" them four hundred years ;
.. shall serve them; and they shall afflict .. The children of Israel
are afflicted as slaves for 400 hundred years.
( 2 ) Ge 16:6 But Abram said unto Sarai , Behold, thy maid is in thy hand ; do to her as it pleaseth thee . And when Sarai dealt hardly with "`anah" her, she fled from her face . {as...: Heb. that which is good in thine eyes} {dealt...: Heb. afflicted her}
.. And when Sarai dealt hardly (and) afflicted her.. Physical and Emotional affliction
( 3 ) Ge 16:9 And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress , and submit "`anah" thyself under her hands .
.. to thy mistress and afflict yourself under her hands.. This context is rather
strange, but often English sees things differently from Hebrew. The picture is
like some religious people who afflict themselves until cuts and blood run
over their bodies. To submit unto your Master's abuse, is also a good
translation of the idea of "affliction" here. The Hebrew word suggests
Hagar was to grin and bear the affliction from Sarah, and thus
afflict herself.
( 4 ) Ge 31:50 If thou shalt afflict "`anah" my daughters , or if thou shalt take other wives beside my daughters , no man is with us; see , God is witness betwixt me and thee.
.. afflict my daughters.. to rape or have sinful intercourse with them
( 5 ) Ge 34:2 And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite , prince of the country , saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her "`anah". {defiled...: Heb. humbled her}
.. and lay with her, and defiled (and) afflicted her .. forced himself upon her, raped and abused her
( 6 ) Ex 1:11 Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict "`anah" them with their burdens . And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities , Pithom and Raamses .
.. over them taskmasters to afflict ..
( 7 ) Ex 1:12 But the more they afflicted "`anah" them, the more they multiplied and grew . And they were grieved because of the children of Israel . {But...: Heb. And as they afflicted them, so they multiplied, etc}
.. afflict ..
( 8 ) Ex 10:3 And Moses and Aaron came in unto Pharaoh , and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews , How long wilt thou refuse to humble "`anah" thyself before me? let my people go , that they may serve me.
.. long wilt thou refuse to afflict to thyself before GOD ? .. The King James'
use to use "humble" thee is misleading, although the idea is implied. The
Pharaoh was to afflict himself before God....this would be a kind of
subordination act, even though its against your free will, you do it
anyway. The Bible word "humble" is the free will of subordination,
to bow to another authority because you love them and your relationship
with them. Here God is simply asking Pharaoh to afflict himself out of
respect to God. God wasn't asking Pharoah to be humble, and there is
a difference in meaning.
( 9 ) Ex 22:22 Ye shall not afflict "`anah" any widow , or fatherless child .
.. afflict ..
( 10 ) Ex 22:23 If thou afflict "`anah" them in any wise "`anah", and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry ;
.. .. afflict ..If thou afflict them in any afflict ..
