God requires us to afflict our souls?

( 11 ) Ex 32:18 And he said , It is not the voice of them that shout "`anah" for mastery , neither is it the voice of them that cry "`anah" for being overcome : but the noise of them that sing "`anah" do I hear . {being...: Heb. weakness}

( 12 ) Le 16:29 � And this shall be a statute for ever unto you: that in the seventh month , on the tenth day of the month , ye shall afflict "`anah" your souls , and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country , or a stranger that sojourneth among you:

.. of the month ye shall afflict your souls .. Why does God ask the children of Israel to afflict their souls before God on the Day of Atonement ? Rather than get them to humble themselves before God ? Some questions remain for the child of faith unanswered..

( 13 ) Le 16:31 It shall be a sabbath of rest unto you, and ye shall afflict "`anah" your souls , by a statute for ever .

.. in the wilderness to afflict thee and prove thee.. God seems to have to afflict humans as a part of saving them .. In the plant world, this phase is called vernalization, a necessary phase to bring on fruiting onset. The greater the affliction, the sweeter the fruit from most trees.
