Q29: What does "Agency" mean? HYPOTHESIS: What does "Agency" mean? INTRODUCTION: The nature of the Holy Spirit is a mystery. Men cannot explain it, because the Lord has not revealed it to them. Men having fanciful views may bring together passages of Scripture and put a human construction on them, but the acceptance of these views will not strengthen the church. Regarding such mysteries, which are too deep for human understanding, silence is golden. {AA 52.1} This SOP study only looks at what is revealed..People have trouble understanding an Agency or a Medium...the personality of love expressed by the Holy Spirit is revealed in careful studies. The Spirit is given as a regenerating agency, to make effectual the salvation wrought by the death of our Redeemer.. {AA 52.4} The Holy Spirit is an agency of the Father or the Son's power. This is the mystery. What is an Agency? How does it work. But the Lord will not leave you to yourselves. He follows you by His Holy Spirit. He thrusts the subject upon you.Manuscript 10a, 1898. {CTr 348.6} The Holy Spirit is an agency of the Father or the Son's power. Whose power flow of light is entering the Medium and leaving the Medium ? Jesus light. He thrusts the subject upon you. See studies of the Medium. Let's test this hypothesis in this SOP study. METHOD: All newer references to SOP using 'Agency' are looked up and discussed. CONCLUSION: The term 'Agency' is a reference to the nature of the 'Holy Spirit', is a mystery. DISCUSSION: This study looks are all new occurances of the term. (1) The Agency represents Jesus He did not refer merely to miracle working, but to all that would take place under the agency of the Holy Spirit. "When the Comforter is come," He said, "whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, He shall testify of Me: and ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with Me from the beginning." John 15:26, 27. {AA 22.1} We have two Comforters, or Agencies for the heavenly Father. Jesus represents His Father. The Holy Spirit can represent the Father or the Son. (2) The Agency is personal teacher. To the church in the wilderness also, in the time of Moses, God gave His "good Spirit to instruct them." And in the days of the apostles He wrought mightily for His church through the agency of the Holy Spirit. The Acts of the Apostles, p. 53. {ChS 256 The Holy Spirit personally instructs the Church and teaches us. In fact the Holy Spirit is a symbol of all the Scripture across the OT, the NT and the SOP teachings. Notice this verse:- Pr 1:8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: (KJV) And translated properly:- Pr 1:8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father (the ten commandments or attitudes of love) , and forsake not the "torah Scripture teachings" of thy mother: And showing this verse as a simile of other Beings:- Pr 1:8 My son, hear the instruction of thy heavenly Father (the ten commandments or attitudes of love) , and forsake not the "torah Scripture teachings" of thy heavenly Mother: The Holy Spirit is a symbol of wisdom. See studies of wisdom. (3) The Agency adminstrates salvation Thus through the agency of the Holy Spirit man becomes a partaker of the divine nature. He is accepted in the Beloved. {DA 675.3 The Holy Spirit personally administrates our salvation in us. (4) The agency personally opposes Satanic agencies It is through the mighty agency of the Holy Spirit that the government of Satan is to be subdued and subjected. It is the Holy Spirit that convinces of sin and expels it from the soul by the consent of the human agent. . . . Through the merits of Christ man may be able to exercise the noblest powers of his being and expel sin from his soul. {ML 43.5} The Holy Spirit personally opposes Satan, and convicts humans of sin and presents us to Christ's salvation. (5) The Agency looks after us during the end of time The agency of the Holy Spirit is to combine with human effort and all heaven is engaged in the work of preparing a people to stand in these last days. The end is near and we want to keep the future world in view. . . . {3SM 425.2} The Agency of the Holy Spirit looks after us during the end of time. (6) The Agency rescues us from the effects of our sins All holy agencies," saith God, "will I set in operation to oppose the armies of the invisible foe, to destroy his power. The eternal agency of the Holy Spirit shall rescue man from the effects of sin, and restore in him the image of God." ... {TDG 28.4} The Agency of the Holy Spirit rescues us from the effects of our sins, removing our inherited propensities to sin, and changing our habits to sin... (7) The Agency brings conviction and conversion It is Christ in his fullness as a sin-pardoning Saviour, that the sinner must see; for the unparalleled love of Christ, through the agency of the Holy Spirit, will bring conviction and conversion to the hardened heart. {HM, November 1, 1893 par. 31} The Agency of the Holy Spirit brings conviction and conversion to the sinner to seek Jesus as their Saviour. (8) The Agency presents Christ power to us Christ is not now with us in person, but through the agency of the Holy Spirit, he is present to impart his power and grace and great salvation. {RH, September 16, 1909 Sometimes pronouns can be confusing, does the Agency represent Christ... or is the statement like this :- Christ is not now with us in person, but through the agency of the Holy Spirit, he is present to impart his power and grace and great salvation. {RH, September 16, 1909 Here the Holy Spirit is shown as a 'he' presenti ng Jesus power to us...is this correct SOP? Sometimes I find pronouns confusing too. Most examples where SOP quotes KJV showing the Holy Spirit as a 'he' is not really a problem because the power flow can be the Father's or the Son's and both of these Beings are a 'He'. To really prove the Holy Spirit is anything, we have to find a reference where no agency or medium powers flow through the Holy Spirit, and the SOP statements on the 'angel of mercy' do this. (9) The Agency is a Comforter We are to commune with God through the agency of the Holy Spirit and when we pray, the Spirit helpeth our infirmities . The plow-share of truth must go deep. We are full of self, satisfied with our condition. We must fall on the Rock and be broken, and then the Spirit of God will take possession of us, and mould us after the divine Pattern. Then make the surrender at once. {ST, January 16, 1893 par. 7} The Holy Spirit is a true Comforter, empowering our prayers, taking them to God and changing our character to God. The Holy Spirit as an Agency is truly a Personal Being...able to protect us...able to woo us, convict us and help us with our salvation. The Holy Spirit cannot be a force of the Father because an Agency is a Being who represents another Being. On the next webpage we will summarize things about the Holy Spirit |
