A study of Adonay Yahweh.

Q13: What does Adonay of Yahweh mean in the Old Testament?

Hypothesis: What does Adonay Yahweh mean?

Introduction: Many Jews were fearful for writing the Sacred Name "YHWH" many times and thus it is said they wrote other ways of saying the same thing. Does a Bible study bear this out ? Or is there something we can get from studying Adonay Yahweh? Unfortunately when translated into Greek it seems both Adonay and Yahweh can be translated as LORD or Lord, so we may not know what the original Hebrew might have been in the New testament.

Method: All references to the Hebrew phrase "Adonay"Yahweh" are studied. Some electronic Bible programs also render this phrase as "Adonay Yahvih" and this is studied as the same Hebrew word.

Conclusion: The phrase "Adonay Yahweh" refers to Son-Yahweh. This phase is common in the Old Testament and shows Jesus was a messenger for His Father just as much in the Old Testament as Jesus was in the New Testament.

Discussion:

(1) Jg 6:21 Then the messenger "malak" of the LORD "Yahweh" put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the messenger "malak" of the LORD "Yahweh" departed out of his sight. Jg 6:22 And when Gideon perceived that he was an messenger "malak" of the LORD "Yahweh", Gideon said, Alas, O Lord "Adonay" GOD "Y@hovih"! for because I have seen an messenger "malak" of the LORD "Yahweh" face to face.

Notice Gideon sees the messenger "malak" of the LORD "Yahweh" as "Adonay Yahovih"...Who is this Being ? There are 395 references to this Hebrew word, Strong's 3096.

(2) Ge 15:2 And Abram said, Lord GOD, "Adonay Yahwih" what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?

"Adonay Yahwih" promises Abraham a son, a simile of , "Adonay Yahwih" as a "son" of Elohiym.

(3) De 9:26 I prayed therefore unto the LORD "Yahweh" , and said, O Lord GOD, "Adonay Yahwih" ", destroy not thy people and thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed through thy greatness, which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand.

Notice two Yahwehs are referenced here, and , "Adonay Yahwih" is the redeemer of Israel.

(4) Jos 7:7 And Joshua "Y@howshuwa`" said, Alas, O Lord GOD, "Adonay Yahwih" , wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side Jordan!

Here is another parallel poetry picture of Joshua, as a simile of, "Adonay Yahwih" . The Hebrew spelling of Joshua is Yeshua, the Greek spelling is Jesus. Jesus is "Adonay Yahwih" a simile of the work Joshua did for Israel.

(5) 2Sa 7:20 And what can David say more unto thee? for thou, Lord GOD , "Adonay Yahwih" , knowest thy servant.

Notice David calls on , "Adonay Yahwih" as His Lord.

(6) 2Sa 7:28 And now, O Lord GOD," Adonay Yahwih" thou art that God, "Elohiym" and thy words be true, and thou hast promised this goodness unto thy servant:

In this context the Being known as "Adonay Yahwih" is part of Elohiym, the heavenly powers of GOD.

(7) Ps 68:20 He that is our God "single numerical ONE of Strong Authority" is the God "single numerical ONE of Strong Authority" of salvation; and unto GOD the Lord "Adonay Yahwih" belong the issues from death.

Notice "Adonay Yahwih" is the Redeemer for salvation, who belong the issue of death.

Ac 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Jesus is "Adonay Yahwih" the only Redeemer for our salvation.

(8) Isa 22:15 Thus saith the Lord GOD "Adonay Yahwih" of hosts, Go, get thee unto this treasurer, even unto Shebna, which is over the house, and say, 16 What hast thou here? and whom hast thou here, that thou hast hewed thee out a sepulchre here, as he that heweth him out a sepulchre on high, and that graveth an habitation for himself in a rock "cela"?

This passage is special because a human being named as "Shebna" makes himself as proud to claim a rock habitation for himself, when Jesus claims to be the "cela" Rock of Ages, the chief rock the builders rejected.

Ps 18:2 The LORD "Yahweh" is my rock "cela" , and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God "single numerical ONE of Strong Authority", my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.

Notice here Yahweh is a simile of "Adonay Yahwih" because of the poetry symbol rock "cela" .

(9) Isa 25:8 He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD "Adonay Yahwih" will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD "Yahweh" hath spoken it.

Re 7:17 For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God "Elohiym" shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

Notice the parallel verses saying the same words using different symbols of GOD. The "Adonay Yahwih" is the Lamb, who is Son-Yahweh, a member of Elohiym.

(10) Jg 13:20 For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the messenger "malak" of the LORD "Yahweh" ascended in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and his wife looked on it, and fell on their faces to the ground.

Notice human beings falling to the ground and worshipping the "messenger of Yahweh".

Jg 13:22 And Manoah said unto his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God "Elohiym".

Notice the couple relate the experience as seeing the messenger of Yahweh, was seeing the heavenly powers, "plural concept" of GOD.

(11) Zec 1:11 And they answered the messenger "malak" of the LORD "Yahweh" that stood among the myrtle trees, and said, We have walked to and fro through the earth, and, behold, all the earth sitteth still, and is at rest.

Notice this chapter speaks volumes about the Father and the Son...Assume the Yahweh of hosts is the Father, and the Messenger of Yahweh is the Son..

Zec 1:2 The LORD YAHWEH hath been sore displeased with your fathers. 3 Therefore say thou unto them, Thus saith the Father-Yahweh of hosts; Turn ye unto me, saith the Father-Yahweh of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the Father-Yahweh of hosts. Zec 1:4 Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets have cried, saying, Thus saith the Father-Yahweh of hosts; Turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but they did not hear, nor hearken unto me, saith the LORD YAHWEH. Zec 1:5 Your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they live for ever? 6 But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not take hold of your fathers? and they returned and said, Like as the Father-Yahweh of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath he dealt with us. Zec 1:7 Upon the four and twentieth day of the eleventh month, which is the month Sebat, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD YAHWEH unto Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet, saying, 8 I saw by night, and behold a man riding upon a red horse, and he stood among the myrtle trees that were in the bottom; and behind him were there red horses, speckled, and white. Zec 1:9 Then said I, O my lord "Adonay", what are these? And the angel "malak" that talked with me said unto me, I will shew thee what these be.

So far in this poetry of pictures we see the Father explaining things. We see a "man" riding a blood red horse among trees, and a messenger speaking meaning to Zechariah, who in this context is possibly an angel.

Zec 1:10 And the man that stood among the myrtle trees answered and said, These are they whom the LORD YAHWEH hath sent to walk to and fro through the earth. Zec 1:11 And they answered the mesenger "malak" of the LORD "Yahweh" that stood among the myrtle trees, and said, We have walked to and fro through the earth, and, behold, all the earth sitteth still, and is at rest.

We can identify this verse correctly from our study:-

Zec 1:11 And they answered the "Son-Yahweh" that stood among the myrtle trees, and said, We have walked to and fro through the earth, and, behold, all the earth sitteth still, and is at rest.

Zec 1:12 Then the angel of the LORD answered and said, O LORD of hosts, how long wilt thou not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which thou hast had indignation these threescore and ten years?

Again we can identify this verse correctly from our study:-

Zec 1:12 Then the "Son-Yahweh" answered and said, O "Father-Yahweh", how long wilt thou not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which thou hast had indignation these threescore and ten years?

Zec 1:13 And the LORD YAHWEH answered the angel messenger "malak" that talked with me with good words and comfortable words.

Are there any poetry pictures in the New Testament with "Son-Yahweh" walking among trees (trees are symbols of believers)?

(a) Re 6:4 And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.

(b) Re 6:10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?

(12) Zec 3:1 And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the messenger "malak" of the LORD "Yahweh" , and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him.

Here are several poetry pictures of earthly symbols representing heavenly symbols. Joshua is a simile of the messenger of Yahweh, who we have found is Son-Yahweh. Joshua is a high priest a the Son-Yahweh is also a high priest. Satan is the adversary to both sanctuary processes.

Job 1:6 Now there was a day when the sons of God "Elohiym" came to present themselves before the LORD "YAHWEH", and Satan came also among them.

Re 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Re 12:10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God "Elohiym", and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God "Elohiym", day and night.

Notice the pictures are consistently presented throughout the OT and NT.

Zec 3:2 And the LORD YAHWEH said unto Satan, The LORD YAHWEH rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD YAHWEH that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?

Notice in verse one we had identified Son-Yahweh as the messenger, but here in verse two, who is Yahweh that speaks, the Father-Yahweh or the Son-Yahweh or both of them? The context does not say, thus we can assume both of them speak as many waters against Satan.

Zec 3:3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the messenger.

Here we see Joshua, a simile of the work of Jesus, standing before the messenger, who is Son-Yahweh.

Zec 3:4 And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment. Zec 3:5 And I said, Let them set a fair mitre upon his head. So they set a fair mitre upon his head, and clothed him with garments. And the Son-Yahweh stood by.

Notice the Father-Yahweh speaks here ? while the Son-Yahweh stood by.

Zec 3:6 And the Son-Yahweh protested unto Joshua (a simile of the work of Jesus) , saying, 7 Thus saith the Father-Yahweh of hosts; If thou wilt walk in my ways, and if thou wilt keep my charge, then thou shalt also judge my house, and shalt also keep my courts, and I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by. Zec 3:8 Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH.

There are numerous passages referencing Adonay Yahweh, as another functional descriptor role for Son-Yahweh, who is the messenger of the Father, sent by the Father to show salvation to mankind. This happened as much in the Old Testament as it did in the New Testament.

In the next webpage, we will consider who the Branch is, and the poetry symbols of the branch.
