Q:11 Hebrew meaning of "faith"? The first use of "Faith" in Scripture:- Ex 17:12 (KJV) But Moses' hands [were] heavy; and they took a stone, and put [it] under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. Ex 17:12 (YLT) And the hands of Moses [are] heavy, and they take a stone, and set [it] under him, and he sitteth on it: and Aaron and Hur have taken hold on his hands, on this side one, and on that one, and his hands are stedfast till the going in of the sun; Ex 17:12 (RSV) But Moses' hands grew weary; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat upon it, and Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; so his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. Ex 17:12 (NIV) When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. Ex 17:12 (LXX) But the hands of Moses were heavy, and they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat upon it; and Aaron and Or supported his hands one on this side and the other on that other on that, and the hands of Moses were supported till the going down of the sun. The second use of "Faith" in Scripture:- De 32:4 (KJV) [He is] the Rock, his work [is] perfect: for all his ways [are] judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right [is] he. De 32:4 (YLT) The Rock! --perfect [is] His work, For all His ways [are] just; God of stedfastness, and without iniquity: Righteous and upright [is] He. De 32:4 (RSV) "The Rock, his work is perfect; for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and right is he. De 32:4 (NIV) He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he. De 32:4 (LXX) ,his works true, and all his ways judgement: God faithful, and there is no unrighteousness; just and holy the Lord. The last use of "Faith" in OT Scripture:- Hab 2:4 (KJV) Behold, his soul [which] is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith. Hab 2:4 (YLT) Lo, a presumptuous one! Not upright is his soul within him, And the righteous by his stedfastness liveth. Hab 2:4 (RSV) Behold, he whose soul is not upright in him shall fail, but the righteous shall live by his faith. Hab 2:4 (LXX) If he should draw back, my soul has no pleasure in him: but the just shall live by my faith. Hab 2:4 (NIV) See, the enemy is puffed up; his desires are not upright— but the righteous person will live by his faithfulness. Notice no one translator is being consistent and true to the Hebrew. Notice what the Author does using Ancient Hebrew translation techniques:- Ex 17:12 (Ancient Hebrew) But Moses' hands [were] heavy; and they took a stone, and put [it] under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were supported until the going down of the sun. De 32:4 (Ancient Hebrew) [He is] the Rock, his work [is] perfect: for all his ways [are] judgment: a God of of support and without iniquity, just and right [is] he. Hab 2:4 (Ancient Hebrew) Behold, his soul [which] is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by support. By being consistent, this English meaning fits every context of "faith" as well as other related Hebrew words to "faith". When you hold Jesus' hand, Jesus is supporting you, and you are supporting Him. As simple as this really is, that is the correct and consistent understanding of "faith". Relationship can only be established by this kind of support. Notice what happens if we use this meaning in the New Testament now:- Jas 2:17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. 18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. (KJV) Can't see past the confusion? Jas 2:17 Even so support, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. 18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast support, and I have works: shew me thy support without thy works, and I will shew thee my support by my works. ( KJV except for "support/faith") James is saying it is a contradiction to support GOD and not have works flowing from that support. The word "support" automatically implies "works flow". But James notes some fake support under the pretense of human theory: Jas 2:14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath support, and have not works? can support save him? 15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, 16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? ( KJV except for "support/faith") Here a follower of GOD sees a brother hungry, and says to "his brother", be filled with food, his support are words of theory, not a supporting flow of love in action. A good example of this fake pretense of support is the Television News broadcast every day if you watch it. Watching horror, and poverty and terrible things causes you to be 'dumbed down', making your 'feelings of support' die, because you cannot go there and do anything positive to support the problem with real loving solutions. So if you can't help, don't watch helplessness. The technology snare is programming in you daily a 'dumbing down' of 'feelings of support' you otherwise might have. But if in your daily walk you come across your neighbour in some problem, and you fail to support that person, you have no support with GOD and your pretend relationship with GOD is really selfish and "self-centred". This is what James is talking about. Our support must have works. Both words are associated with each other. Jas 2:21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? 22 Seest thou how faith "support" wrought with his works, and by works was faith "support" made perfect? .... 23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham belie ved God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. 24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified , and not by faith "support" only. In this example James says Abraham supported GOD, by doing what GOD told Him to do. But notice Abraham's additional support, in what he said: Ge 22:8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. So Abraham's support was made complete when He did as God told him, and as Abraham supported GOD further by speaking prophecy to his son. Is the reader beginning to see what "support" means? Ro 10:3 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. 5 For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them. Ro 10:6 But the righteousness which is of faith "support" speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:) 7 Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.) 8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith "support" , which we preach; 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Notice two kinds of salvation Paul writes here. The pious kind of salvation that means nothing to GOD is doing good works following the law and living by the law using human powers of effort. The second kind of salvation is the true means of being saved when we support Jesus with His words of support in our hearts. These words of support we confess with our mouth. This means Jesus power flows through us and not human powers alone. Ro 11:4 But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal. 5 Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace. 6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work. Paul continues to add another small child theme to the one in Romans 10. He adds another Hebrew word "Baal" which actually means "master". 1Ki 18:21 And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.(KJV) Israel was following one of two Authorities: GOD or BAAL. In other words, Paul is saying we either support GOD and His words allowing His flow of power in us, or we follow our ourselves as MASTER of our own lives, doing pious good things using human powers alone, as we see fit. Paul calls this doing the "works of the law", while you are a master of your own works of doing. But if you support Jesus and His beauty or grace, than your supporting of Him are His works in you, to the Father's glory. There is a major difference in the "works" we do. It is not human power alone that works in me, but Jesus power works in me. Can the reader catch what support is really about? Ro 3:27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of ..... faith "support". Ro 9:32 Wherefore? Because they sought i t not by faith "support" , but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; Ga 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith "support" in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith "support" of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. Hab 2:4 Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith "support". Desire the second birth daily, in prayer say: Our Father, help me support Jesus using His words I sow. Amen You have just sown a prayer promise in your mind. |
