Q21: What does the Hebrew word echad mean? Hypothesis: What does the Hebrew word "echad" mean? Introduction: Muslim and Jews alike lay claim that the LORD Yahwah ELohiym is ONE LORD. What does this actually mean ? Does the Hebrew word "echad" in this statement mean numerically one like our cardinal number for one? Or does the word mean numerically one from the unity of its parts? After all Hebrew people considered many things to be the sum of its whole. THus a tree consisted of limbs, branches and leaves, but the unity of them all is the tree. Event he tree is not the end result of Hebrew thinking. for they thought in verbs of action, not satic things like as we see nouns. To the Hebrew mind set, the tree was the thing moving holding up its many parts, the "canopy supported" is the Hebrew idea of a tree. So let's see how "echad" fits in the Bible context of its verses. Method: All verses with echad are considered and for the reader. All verses in Genesis are shown thus eliminating any bias over selecting only ones supporting the hypothesis:- Conclusion: The Hebrew word "echad" means unit. The word may have gradually become to mean "one" over time when referring to "one thing in its unit", but the vast majority of contexts showing the word fitting with the idea of being the unit of many parts. Discussion: The study details supporting the conclusion following here:- (1) Ge 1:5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning was day one "echad".
Most if not all translations reverse the Hebrew order of words "evening and morning was the first day" is incorrect, because time only started here, and "first" compares a day to another day, but this was time zero to the day one.
Morning and Evening is a unity of parts of time, and the total of these parts became day one.
(2) Ge 1:9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one "echad" place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

There are many rib bones , the whole is the chest, God took only one from many parts.
(5) Ge 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one "echad" flesh.
Man and woman are two entities, the whole is human, they become a unit of flesh.
(6) Ge 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one "echad" of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
Good and evil are contrasts, the whole is wisdom, the man has become a unit like us (knowing unfortunately both aspects of wisdom)
(7) Ge 4:19 And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one "echad" was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.
Two titles of women, the whole is marriage, the title of one of those women was Adah.
(8) Ge 8:5 And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month: in the tenth month, on the first "echad" day of the month, were the tops of the mountains seen.
two moon times, the whole is a month, in the tenth new moon in the unit to the new moon.
(9) Ge 8:13 And it came to pass in the six hundredth and first year, in the first month, the first "echad" day of the month, the waters were dried up from off the earth: and Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and, behold, the face of the ground was dry.
many days, the whole is month, the first unit till the new moon.
(10) Ge 10:25 And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one "echad" was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother's name was Joktan.
two sons, the whole is family, the title of one of two sons was Peleg.

(13) Ge 19:9 And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one "echad" fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon
the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door.
many people, the whole is a crowd, the one fellow came to sojourn
(14) Ge 21:15 And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs.

(15) Ge 22:2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one "echad" of the mountains which I will tell thee of.'

(16) Ge 26:10 And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one "echad" of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us.

many promises, the whole is a blessing (present), is there to you one present my father ?
(18) Ge 27:44 And tarry with him a few "echad" days, until thy brother's fury turn away;
This is the first case where Echad is not singular, but plural in it's concept. If singular means "ONE" than plural in Hebrew implies "MANY". Would this not also apply to El, which means "ONE" and Elohiym means "MANY".
one day and another day, the whole is a few days, tarry with him a unit of [some] days...
(19) Ge 27:45 Until thy brother's anger turn away from thee, and he forget that which thou hast done to him: then I will send, and fetch thee from thence: why should I be deprived also of you both in one "echad" day?
two children, the whole is twins, should I be childless of the two of you of one day ?
(20) Ge 48:22 Moreover I have given to thee one "echad" portion above thy brethren, which I took out of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow.
twelve shoulders, the whole is a clan, gave you one shoulder in addition to your brothers..
(21) Ge 49:16 Dan shall judge his people, as one "echad" of the tribes of Israel.
twelve tribes, the whole is Israel, as one of the tribes of Israel
For more study, see a discussion with emails with a person (P) who views "echad" as Jews do, meaning "numerically one", here.
Next we will consider if Jesus actually allowed people to worship Him as a supreme Being (thus they saw Jesus as the Son of Elohim) while on earth?
