The Science of Bible study

How do we study of Bibles?

Science is the study of experiments in the now. There is nothing wrong with those of child like faith, doing child like experiments with God's power. He really does not mind, and often enjoys the innocent child like faith of young ones trusting in His Name. So do not be afraid to experiment with God, and learn to trust His power more and more.

Beginners method of listening to Jesus speak

A common method of Bible study for beginners is to close your eyes in prayer asking Jesus to show you His words to you for that day, open the Bible with your eyes closed and thank Him for selecting a passage for you today.

You do occasionally ask in presumption, but most times the Lord Jesus really does speak to you in this way. Here are some passages that He selected for me over the years, when I was young.

Ps 145:8 The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.

A great message from Jesus. How many of us believe the Bible study we do are actually the words of Jesus speaking back to us?

Isa 42:16 And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them.

Something I claimed and needed as a school teacher many years ago.

Jer 31:18 I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the LORD my God. 19 Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.

One of my popular rebukes by Jesus, because of my inexperience as a teacher I was chastised many times because of my youth.

Eze 21:13 Because it is a trial, and what if the sword contemn even the rod? it shall be no more, saith the Lord GOD.

One of my popular chastisement references by Jesus, while I did not despise my Lord's discipline, it does mention this in this verse...

Ho 6:1 Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up. 2 After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight.

A faviourite verse to cheer those sick and depressed, given to me by Jesus.

Ps 37:4 Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

A fantastic verse to encourage us to seek Jesus in His word, and to us that power in our lives.

There are dozens of such texts selected long ago and marked in my old paper Bible, for me to review and ponder.

Youngsters method of word studies by paper concordance

This method is where God impresses your mind to seek a word and study all the verses of that word to seek out its meaning. The method is slow but deeply satisfying, as Jesus called Himself the Word. The Word is like a Seed ready to be planted in the heart.

Some word studies I remember doing was with the help of an old elder not even of my denomination. He was a Greek expert as well, and I was a youngest who knew nothing of the sort. The word I wanted to understand was "parousia" the Greek word translated coming. Some Jehovah Witnesses had come and confused me regarding the meaning of this word, as an invisible presence rather than a literal presence. He happened to have a Jehovah Witness Epiglottis edition dated in the 1800's, which describes the word in question as a literal presence. When I asked the witnesses next time they came they said the older editions of their book had mistakes and have been corrected in the newer editions. Wow, talk about present truth making mistakes. Anyway that is one method of Bible study that works for some.

Youngsters method of Bible stories

This method is about reading whole chapters to gain the story behind the verses. My favourite story is the book of Hosea in which Jesus is told to marry us as people of adultery. What a story of love in this book.

There is the story of the farmer who sowed Jesus seeds in others. Some seed fell on good soil, some was taken away by birds. Some was choked by weeds. This poetry allegory is a beautiful picture that interested me deeply. It is my personal aim to sow the seeds of Jesus in others. I could not think of a better thing to do.

Mature method of Bible study

Over the years my experimenting with Scripture has changed. Once when I was invited to a private church meeting, the elder of the church invited speaker from USA to speak of a strange doctrine I had never heard of before. The visitor was gracious and kind and answered all the questions carefully and well. Was this truth I thought. I asked God to show me from Scripture was this strange doctrine truth or not. My only method of Bible study in those days was a paper Bible and a paper concordance. The Lord impressed to purchase an electronic Bible, the Power Bible CD, for $20; which in simple terms has the interlinear Hebrew and Greek for the Bible, as well as over a dozen Bible versions. It was simple and easy to use. Just what I needed. When I started studying the KJV in Hebrew I realized how little I knew my Bible. Over the next three months I read hundreds of words and made hundreds of pages of notes studying the meaning of each Bible word carefully. Later I came back to the Elder to discuss the strange doctrine with him, but he refused a meeting. The strange doctrine was indeed error, but carefully crafted to seem as truth.

Nowadays I still use this electronic Bible to study Hebrew and English together. But I also discovered a problem with Bible translations....they are never consistent....when you come across a Hebrew word, it should have the same English word for every time it is used...this is how language works...but many scholars try to push multiple meanings in Hebrew, and while such a thing does occur sometimes, its not common. Most translators have a field day with some Hebrew words having over a dozen different meanings. Its wrong. At first I though I was the only person who believe in this way, but later I stumbled across Jeff Benner and his website Ancient Hebrew Research Center. His work was a God send. I currently have developed his work into a website of my own that uses the Ancient Hebrew pictograph script as a tool for understand Hebrew word meanings. Scholars from even my own denomination scoff at the idea...Biblical research is very young...one day soon people will come to understand all the NT and OT was originally written in Hebrew by Hebrew people for Hebrew people. Paul had the disliked stand by conservative Jews to also speak Greek when he wanted to, so the writings of Paul were written in Hebrew but later translated into Greek. These copies survived to this day.

The important thing about Bible study is to do it daily. Why ?

  • The words you read, is Jesus speaking back to you
  • When you listen to Jesus speak to you, via the Holy Spirit in your conscience, the words you hear is often Bible verses, as Jesus speaks to us in this way.
  • Reading Mother Nature is also a good way to understand Jesus and His object lessons in Nature.

There is a Bible reason for daily Bible study...

Jer 23:29 Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?

Bible study grinds our pride to powder and weathers our pride into humble soil, able to receive the Seed of Jesus cheerfully.

This Bible study only happens if you study your Bible through the Holy Spirit in Jesus Name, and not from a self-powered ego looking for knowledge. Jesus wants doers of the Word, not hearers only.

May you see the need to be made humble each day. Practice spending 30 seconds a day reading a Bible passage just for you. After a while those 30 seconds will increase until you spend whole hours with Jesus at His holy Word. Shalom
