Why is the sin-offering personified?
Why is the sin-offering personified?
When Cain was pondering his offering for his own personal missing, he was feeling jealous that God accepted Abel's offering, but his own, God wasn't really happy. Notice the comment God makes concerning the offering process.
Ge 4:7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin-offering lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
If we leave the Hebrew word as "chataah" and translate it KJV does, "and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door" we could say it was Cain's sinning that would rule over him as a master...
But the Hebrew word chataah, is not about sin, its about transferring their sin unto a Sin-bearer, through offering, the two boys were making a salvation process, as God required. In fact the word "chataah" is really a salvation system for dealing with sinning.
Strong's 2403. 'chataah' Ancient Hebrew pictograph reads "The outside covering strong. Behold the Person!"
Notice the Hebrew word has a person pictograph in the word, and is personified. So why is the sin-offering word personified? And why does the sin-offering rule over us as a master?
Firstly the Lamb that was offered for sinning as part of the atonement process for salvation did represent a literal human being, called Jesus the Son of Man. Jesus was what the Lamb stood for and was the Sin-Bearer in the sin-offering process.
Joh 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin-offering of the world.
Secondly the sin-offering represents another Person: Satan, the serpent, who is also a master wanting to rule over your life. This makes the sin-offering word quite complex, pointing to a salvation process that deals with sinning coming from two opposing directions, Jesus and Satan.
Nu 21:8 And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.
Both of these Beings claim to want to rule over your life, Satan might beguile you or force you into submission, but Jesus's rule over you is based on love: you are willing for a Higher Authority to rule over you.
Why even agnostic and atheists acknowledge Strong Authorities ruling over them. Governments are Strong Authorities over us.
However when we are found sinning, we are guilty of eternal death, a state of non-existence. The only way of avoiding non-existence is to come to God's salvation process, which is called the sin-offering. The sin-offering says the wages of missing is death.
Only Jesus can pay the penalty of the second death experience and grant us His ongoing living, because Jesus came as a human living as we do, but like a second Adam did not need a sin-offering for Himself, because Jesus never did any missing before His Father.
This act of love by Jesus demonstrated newer aspects of love not seen before in the universe. These were grace, mercy and forgiveness, something unheard of before, but now revealed to us by the sin-offering process.
Ro 7:7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
Here Paul makes the broader torah teachings in context become the ten commandments. He is speaking about the love mirror, that shows us ten attitudes of love. Notice the problem of sin-offering.
Ro 7:8 But sin-offering, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin-offering was dead.
Sin-offering condemns because the mirror tells you your unclean before God, found missing. If there was no mirror, there would be no condemnation.

Jas 1:23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. The Mirror is the Ten Commandments |
Ro 7:14 For we know that the (Father's ten attitudes of love )law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin-offering.
The mirror is not the problem, it is holy...the problem is we are found missing before the mirror, and sold under the sin-offering.
Ro 7:17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin-offering that dwelleth in me.
Here as back in Genesis with the first mention of sin-offering, we have the sin-offering ruling over us. The sin-offering says we must face non-existence because we are found missing before the mirror.
Some argue that is it pointless to serve a BEING who changes his ways and demand obedience, our pride does not like another PERSON ruling over us. But GOD is not asking you to live in His kingdom under Him as a PERSON, for GOD is even subject to His own rules of love. The mirror is the eternal standard of the kingdom, not GOD. Why did Jesus have to come and die for a sinning people on earth ? If God is so powerful, why didn't God change the rules? But He doesn't, and He can't; because God doesn't change, and lives under the Mirror just like all other Beings do. Now your pride can go away, you come to heaven under the standards of the Mirror, not the dictates of God...not a BEING...but a rational eternal simple set of ten attitudes about love. Doesn't that sound easier than our Governments today with hundreds of rules for this and that, because we ignore the ten attitudes of love, we fail to appreciate the mirror of living.
Ro 7:17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin-offering that dwelleth in me.
Can we make excuses that it is my sin-offering dwelling in me sinning, and not me? For my mind is willing but my flesh is weak? The sin-offering we package to Jesus for our atonement with God, includes all our propensities for sinning, our carnal habits for sinning, our specific sins we have committed, and the fact Satan doesn't want to us to leave His Authority claim over us. So this sin-offering does indeed war within us for quite some time, forgiveness is not an immediate cancellation of every problem in your life. You are renewed daily by Jesus presence, not made brand new.
2Co 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a renewed creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become renewed.
The Hebrew word here would have been chadesh, the idea of a new moon, is not a brand new moon each month, but a renewed moon each month. So the sin-offering process is a renewed draft of Jesus love coming daily to you, not a brand new complete change coming over you once you are baptised.
Ps 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
O for a change like that! The quickening process is gradual and changes us daily, as we are quickened by Jesus power through the Holy Spirit.
We can be sure our sinning is forgiven when we ask Jesus to forgive us, some aspects of the sin-offering process is immediate and permanent: they are cast into the depths of the sea, never more to be remembered.
Mic 7:19 He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities (guilt); and thou wilt cast all their sin-offerings into the depths of the sea.
If you should fall out of Jesus, your missing that keep you from heaven will be only those from that point in time forward from a sincere sin-offering made to Jesus. But like any garden, removed of weeds, and devoid of good plants growing in it, the weeds similar to your old ways will come growing back, often worse than before, because your soil of your heart is open and bare of Jesus power.
