A study of Cherubims? Angels.

Q5: A study of angels. Who are the Cherubims?

Hypothesis: What does Cherubims karuwb mean?

Method: All verses in the Old Testament are studied but only samples listed here for the reader.

Introduction: Many people of faith say the angels are the only companion of GOD. In the Genesis of mankind where GOD says "let us" make mankind, and GOD in the singular tense goes ahead to make mankind, that the other Beings present in the Creation were angel Beings. Most certainly other Angelic Beings were also present watching the Creation of Earth with special interest.

One interesting thing about "cherubs" as a Hebrew word for angels is how rarely the word is used in the Bible. Mostly certainly cherubs is an "Angel" word, but the most common word used in the heavens for a Being carrying a message is "malak" who a messenger. Some messengers might be angels, some might be humans and some might be other heavenly Beings.

Conclusion: Cherubim is the Hebrew word for angels that seem to be special in some way for they mostly stay around the Fathers throne in heaven. There is a general lack of verses concerning angels directly involved in Yahweh's work of salvation to mankind, their functional role seems more secondary in importance.

Discussion: Samples of verses of interest are listed below:-

(1)Ge 3:24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims , and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Angels guard the tree of life when Adam sinned.

(2) Ex 25:18 And thou shalt make two Cherubims of gold, of beaten work shalt thou make them, in the two ends of the mercy seat.

Angels surrounded the mercy seat, a simile picture of Yahwehs throne in the temple of heaven.

There is a general lack of verses concerning angels. Consider other phrases we know to be angels:-

(3) Da 8:15 And it came to pass, when I, even I Daniel, had seen the vision, and sought for the meaning, then, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of a man. Da 8:16 And I heard a man's voice between the banks of Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision.

Gabriel is an angel who comes to Daniel while in prayer.

(4) Da 9:21 Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation.

We know Gabriel is an angel because He flies from heaven to earth.

(5)Lu 1:19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.

Gabriel is an angel who comes to Mary with good news.

(6) Lu 1:26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, (KJV)

Gabriel is an angel who comes to Elizabeth with good news.

Even with these extra examples, there is not much said about angels working around God's salvation process dealing with humans.

(7) Mt 18:10 Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.

Angels do have an active role in helping Elohiym with aspects of salvation, but the general lack of verses concerning the direct revelation of Yahweh to His people suggesting angels do not undertake this functional role.

Instead angels may play a functional role only as a messenger, the Hebrew word "malak", or that other heavenly Beings apart from angels, also take messages from Yahweh to His people.
