Special fast makes us holy

Q11: What thing can we do that Jesus promises to make us holy?

Consider this Bible text:-

Isa 58:4 Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.

5 Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?

6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?

7 Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?

This is NOT a fast for food, though clearly many of us are overweight already from eating too rich a diet...No, this is a different fast... Never heard of this before.? So when does this fast happen, so Jesus can make me holy ? Consider the fuller context of the verses:

Isa 58:8 Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily:

Notice the fast we do will make Jesus keep us so healthy, as to break like light shinning every morning, a spring chicken! The context continues...

Isa 58:10 And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry...Isa 58:11 And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought,....Isa 58:12 ... and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, ....

What amazing promises if we practice this amazing concept of fasting....but notice when this fasting occurs...

Isa 58:13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day;...

Wow ! Every Sabbath is a fast. Not of food. The fast is to afflict our souls, break our bonds so Jesus can come in and make us holy. So whatever your affliction is ye fast....no gossiping for 24 hours, no lustful thoughts for an entire day, no boasting, no selfish thoughts, no sinning of any kind for 24 hours...this is the true fasting spoken of here, that is the promise Jesus makes our Sabbath time with Him holy.

Isa 58:13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:

Imagine every Sabbath is a fasting against those "pet sins" that you do regularly during the week....controlling your thoughts for an entire day.. I wonder how many of us keep Sabbath as the 7th day but fail to keep it holy, because we do not fast on this special day and thus fail to allow Jesus to make us His special people.

I have tried this on some Sabbaths when alone it is easier to do, just you and Jesus alone..in the presence of worldly people on Sabbath it is very hard to fast and afflict our souls for Jesus. I am determined to try this every Sabbath from now on and pray each Sabbath to come into the fasting Jesus requires from me, until under His grace we eventually cease from sinning, a point in time we will NOT know , a relationship with Jesus we can look forward to....The Bible is saying six days we have to fail and do sinning under Jesus care, but the Sabbath is a special time for fasting, so we can do our best to feel Jesus powers in us, and He will do the rest....Praise God for the Sabbath, a small but regular time set aside for the extra commitment to Him, to reach the fuller completed stages of love. And become perfectly complete with a humble meek power flowing in our lives, all thanks to Jesus. Shalom
