The lowly spreading grape vine..

( 11 ) Isa 57:15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity , whose name is Holy ; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble "shaphal" spirit , to revive the spirit of the humble "shaphal", and to revive the heart of the contrite ones .

.. .. also that is of a contrite and low ..revive the spirit of the low .. Again the contrast of pride / humble or high / low..

( 12 ) Eze 17:6 And it grew , and became a spreading vine of low "shaphal" stature , whose branches turned toward him, and the roots thereof were under him: so it became a vine , and brought forth branches , and shot forth sprigs .

.. became a spreading vine of low stature .. The grape vine is a good example of the humility the Hebrew is saying, to be lowly is the way it grows. One could hardly say a grape vine grows agressively...it's manner is to push lowly along and must be trained to say in the position it wired into to. This is a lowly symbol for "shaphael". What a picture of human attitude ! May we be like this. Shalom

( 13 ) Eze 17:14 That the kingdom might be base "shaphal", that it might not lift itself up , but that by keeping of his covenant it might stand . {but...: Heb. to keep his covenant, to stand to it}

.. 17:14 That the kingdom might be low ..

( 14 ) Eze 17:24 And all the trees of the field shall know that I the LORD have brought down the high tree , have exalted the low "shaphal" tree , have dried up the green tree , and have made the dry tree to flourish : I the LORD have spoken and have done it.

.. have exalted the low .. Notice the contrast of God speaking, the tall high tree is proud, against the low trees in humility. The tall ones are humbled and the low ones exalted or made high. Jesus made this point once in saying when you come to meetings do not take the important seats, but the unimportant seat. Than your patron who see you humbly seated will exalt you among the others and give you a higher seat to sit down in a different place. This is how this Hebrew word of humility, works.

( 15 ) Eze 21:26 Thus saith the Lord GOD ; Remove the diadem , and take off the crown : this shall not be the same : exalt him that is low "shaphal", and abase him that is high .

.. the same exalt him that is low ..

( 16 ) Eze 29:14 And I will bring again the captivity of Egypt , and will cause them to return into the land of Pathros , into the land of their habitation ; and they shall be there a base "shaphal" kingdom . {habitation: or, birth} {base: Heb. low}

.. and they shall be there a low ..

( 17 ) Eze 29:15 It shall be the basest "shaphal" of the kingdoms ; neither shall it exalt itself any more above the nations : for I will diminish them, that they shall no more rule over the nations .

.. low ..

( 18 ) Mal 2:9 Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base "shaphal" before all the people , according as ye have not kept my ways , but have been partial in the law . {have been...: or, lifted up the face against: Heb. accepted faces}

.. made you contemptible and low ..

( 19 ) Mt 18:4 Whosoever therefore shall humble "shaphal" himself as this little child , the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven .

.. Whosoever therefore shall as low as a little child .. This is perhaps the most accurate definition of this Hebrew word of humility. Being as low as a little child. What makes little child low ? That's a good question...what does make little children's minds lowly... that they implicitly trust what others say in obedience ? This is the kind of Hebrew humility "shaphael" means..

( 20 ) Mt 23:12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased "shaphal"; and he that shall humble "shaphal" himself shall be exalted .

.. .. exalt himself shall be low ..and he that shall low ..

Again the idea of contrasting high with low
