Ancient Hebrew, proving original meanings of Repent

Q:4. Show Ancient Hebrew pictographs : Repent

Many websites make the concept of "repent" into many different meanings...

There are two Hebrew words for this theme.

Ge 5:29 And he called his name Noah (Noch), saying, This same shall comfort (Nocham) us

Hebrew names are titles of action or verbs of function. In this example Noah means "one who comforts". Sometimes a Hebrew word can have an opposite meaning, "one who shows sorrow" can become one who "comforts the other". For example if you are "sorrowful for doing wrong to another" your actions are showing "comfort to the one you wronged".

Gen 24:67 And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother's death. (KJV)

Here the word has the meaning of comfort.

Job 42:6 Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.(KJV)

Here the meaning is the opposite of comfort, to show sorrow.

The pictograph meaning for "comfort" is the "people over the nations""outside""flows". When people show comfort, there is outside of them a flow... a flow of caring feelings... when God shows comfort, there is "over the nations outside a flow" as well. This can be a flow of comfort, or a flow of sorrow.

The second Hebrew word for "repent" is the idea to "turn".

The meaning of this word is easier to see. One is simply turning around one's sinful life, and "pressing securely homeward". And if you are a first time believer, your returning to GOD begins as a babe...

  • 1Co 3:1 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as "flesh" even as unto babes in Christ.
  • 2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.

The first time you come to Jesus, you come as a babe, and grow up into Jesus, feeding on milk...you also come with all the propensities of fallen flesh, and these Jesus will remove gradually as you are willing for Him to remove them, so together there is a growing process in the Christian walk towards GOD.

These pictures of words really helps to make Scripture simple and easy to understand.

So there you have it, "to repent" is simply to be "pressing securely homeward" to Jesus, with "sorrow" for your sins. And this is not something we can do on our own, it is a gift of GOD.

Ac 5:31 Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.

Notice "repentance" is a gift of GOD, and in this verse includes BOTH Hebrew concepts, the "returning home" to Jesus and Jesus forgiveness for your "sorrow for sins".

Don't you love how easy it is to enjoy Scripture...
