Contrasting Hebrew words

Q18: Examples of contrasting Hebrew words?

One way to test pictograph theory is to see if the meanings in contrasting words do actually contrast.

Pr 29:23 A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.

A poetry parallel, the word pride is opposite to honour and humble, while low is a simile of humble.

Strongs 1346. "pride"

Strongs 8217. "low"

Jas 4:6 ...God resisteth the proud,

but giveth grace unto the humble.

A poetry parallel, the word proud is opposite to humble, while grace is a simile of humble.

This NT verse comes from Psalms 138:6.

Strongs 1364. "proud"

Strongs 6041. "humble"

So looking at all these Hebrew pictographs can we see contrasts and similes ? The pride pictograph reads "Walking Strong Secure. Behold the Person!" aptly describes a person full of pride. Notice the related word proud means "Walking Home Secure. Behold the Person" suggests a meaning along simile lines.

Low on the other hand is "the pressed mouth authority" suggests one who knows how to hold his tongue. And proud the "walking strong" is contrasted with humble, the person who "looks across the people with active hands" suggests a brother's keeper, not a person walking strong over others.

The pictograph tool can be confusing perhaps if overused...but it is a useful tool to help show where Ancient Hebrew meanings came from and what the word might mean. Shalom
