sin-offering, Cains offering, Abel

( 1 ) Ge 4:7 If thou doest well , shalt thou not be accepted ? and if thou doest not well , sin "chatta'ah" lieth at the door . And unto thee shall be his desire , and thou shalt rule over him.

.. 'eth and if thou doest not well sin-offering lieth at the door.. Notice Cain and Abel were doing the actions of a sin-offering. Abel lay a lamb on the altar. Cain lay a bundle of wheat on the altar. One offering was accepted, the other rejected. Why ? The order of offerings was wrong. God had many offerings for different purposes. There was a sin-offering for sinning. Next was a voluntary offering, a ram offering called in Hebrew olah. Then there were meat offerings , fellowship offerings and peace offerings. Finally there were offerings for sins of ignorance.

Abel offered to GOD a voluntary offering. a lamb, while Cain offered a meat offering, by passing the need for a volunatry lamb offering. Essentially what Cain was doing was inventing a human authority method for his own salvation, rather than following the method GOD offered to Adam and Eve from the beginning. Cains method was a religious method of salvation based on sin-offerings, but the human effort flowed for nothing. This religion method is called Baal in the Bible. Today we have other labels for Baal religion such as legalism. Cain's method was a human based method of saving the sinner based on human authority. Abel's method was a Saviour based method based on divine authority. Notice both methods are religious, follow the Bible verses and are sincere. What is different from both methods is the obedience factor which implies humility to follow's God's teachings implicitly. Obedience is a factor describing one's ability to respond to love. One can respond to love with humility or with selfish pride. Cain did not have humility, but showed pride to take short cuts in the salvation method his Saviour required from him.

Notice the verses that follow from chataah. "His desire shall rule over thee". Chataah is a system in which the sinner takes a Saviour as a sin-bearer and offers that offering as a sin-offering. In OT times it was an animal, it NT times it was a human (Jesus the Lamb of GOD !). Abel took the lamb and pictured His Saviour dieing in the place of his own sinning, and with humble attitude felt the atonement. Jesus than ruled over Abel, with a flow of good things through Abel. Cain took the wheat and pictured His Saviour overlooking his sinning and proud attitude, Cain felt atonement was granted regardless of his sinning and reckless attitudes to details of his love response. God warned Cain that Satan would rule over him, with a flow of bad things through Cain.

Throughout Scripture we will see Satan's religion of Baal. The chataah to Satan as a 'saviour', with a human offering to Satan, to make atonement for sinning. Thus the sin-offering could be made daily while sinning daily. The promised flow of power from the 'saviour' was replaced with human power. The sinner could keep on sinning with his faviourite pet sins, while making a sin-offering again and again. This is Baal's method of salvation, and no wonder GOD was sick of His own system of salvation being abused.

( 2 ) Ge 18:20 And the LORD said , Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great , and because their sin "chatta'ah" is very grievous ;

.. is great and because their sin-offering is very grievous ..

Why is a sin-offering grievous in Sodom ? I feel GOD hates false religion. GOD loves wicked people because they have no pretending religion of salvation. Wicked people do not care for salvation and hence do not bother with salvation systems. What erks God more than any people are the religious ones. Such people in the pretentious piety of thinking they are saved because they practice salvation systems found in Scripture. Satan reads Scripture too and invented a religious system of salvation based on Scripture, but without Scripture's power from GOD. The power of salvation comes from humans instead. I feel Sodom would have had many human sacrifices daily to make sin-offerings to Satan for salvation. There are many ways to kill people. You can kill them slowly or kill them quickly.

Ge 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt dieing die.

The verse God spoke here has the Hebrew word muwth twice. The correct translation is to "dieing die". This is a slow death of dieing, or decaying to death. The second repeat might also imply the second death, since the first death is called a sleep in Scripture. So in Sodom days one might expect human sacrifices as physical deaths quickly or as a physical death slowly; or both. Today in modern times since humans oppose rapid killing, modern Baal religion uses the slower sacrifices of humans dieing instead.

GOD is grieved to see sin-offering abused in this way, and hence His determination to remove such a city from the face of the earth.

( 3 ) Ge 31:36 And Jacob was wroth , and chode with Laban : and Jacob answered and said to Laban , What is my trespass ? what is my sin "chatta'ah", that thou hast so hotly pursued after me ?

.. What is my trespass what is my sin-offering .. Why does Jacob speak to Laban as human to human using the Hebrew word "sin-offering" ? If you read the verses of context, Jacob tells Laban the years he worked faithfully despite being cheated by Laban. Rachel , however steals her father's gods, and introduces Baal concepts into "sin-offering", salvation based on human efforts. Jacob is unaware of both methods of salvation in his midst, and challenges Laban to find the "sin-offering" or "error" in his household. Notice Rachel conceals the gods from her father, and this tells us that Baal religion is based on deception as well as upon human based authority.

So the two men clashed over the methods of salvation, hence why Jacob used the word "sin-offering". Jacob used GOD as his authority. Laban used BAAL as his authority. Jacob's sin-offering was based on divine power flowing through him. Laban's sin-offering was based on human power flowing through him. Notice both men were Hebrew people, spoke Hebrew and were sincere and genuine with their faith to a Saviour. Could Jesus' love reach Laban despite his following of Baal and his Saviour Satan ? I would like to think yes. Jesus reads the heart of man, not the external, but the internal. This is why judging humans is unwise. And why God's assembly can have both functional and dysfunctional people in His church.

( 4 ) Ge 50:17 So shall ye say unto Joseph , Forgive , I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren , and their sin "chatta'ah"; for they did unto thee evil : and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father . And Joseph wept when they spake unto him.

.. of thy brethren and their sin-offering ..

( 5 ) Ex 10:17 Now therefore forgive , I pray thee, my sin "chatta'ah" only this once , and intreat the LORD your God , that he may take away from me this death only.

.. therefore forgive I pray thee, my sin-offering .. Notice the sin-offering takes one away from death. The sin-bearer removes the sinner from the penalty of death.

( 6 ) Ex 29:14 But the flesh of the bullock , and his skin , and his dung , shalt thou burn with fire without the camp : it is a sin offering "chatta'ah".

.. camp it is a sin-offering ..

( 7 ) Ex 29:36 And thou shalt offer every day a bullock for a sin offering "chatta'ah" for atonement : and thou shalt cleanse the altar , when thou hast made an atonement for it, and thou shalt anoint it, to sanctify it.

.. day a bullock for a sin-offering ..

( 8 ) Ex 30:10 And Aaron shall make an atonement upon the horns of it once in a year with the blood of the sin offering "chatta'ah" of atonements : once in the year shall he make atonement upon it throughout your generations : it is most holy unto the LORD .

.. the blood of the sin-offering .. Notice Aaron is a type of the Saviour who is a type for the sacrifice, the sin-bearer, who becomes the sin-offering for removal of sins from sinners. Wonderful gospel news, for the sinner has another person willing to die the second death instead of the sinner. A sinning human cannot experience the second death and come back to life again. His sinning would hold him eternally in a place of non-existance. Only Jesus who came in human flesh and lived without sinning could experience the second death in the place of those who deserved to die this death of non-existance. Thus Jesus could rise to life again because He had no personal sinning of His own to hold Him in non-existance for ever. The attitude of gratitude keeps the sinner's heart humble before His Saviour, the sin-offering comes with power to change character and the life of the sinner's walk each day.

( 9 ) Ex 32:30 And it came to pass on the morrow , that Moses said unto the people , Ye have sinned a great sin : and now I will go up unto the LORD ; peradventure I shall make an atonement for your sin "chatta'ah".

.. make an atonement for your sin-offering .. Noticed the Hebrew words here show both chata and chataah in the same verse of context. Ye have sinned a great sin-offering...now I will go to Jesus and make atonement for your sin-offering.

The sinning of the children was great. The sin-offering was to be great as well. This is interesting, for such an offering does not imply more sacrifice or a change of animals or a change in the Saviour dieing for sinning. The term great sin-offering implies a conviction of attitude on behalf of the sinner for the sinning.

Lu 7:44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. 45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet. 46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment. 47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.

These verses show the attitudes of different sinners to the sin-offering. What is different is the flow of love that is poured out to each sinner, and the love response that flows back.

( 10 ) Ex 32:32 Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin "chatta'ah"--; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written .

.. Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin-offering ..

Only after 10 verses, do we already see sin-offering consistently used as a transferance for sins done by sinners. We also see the term "sin-offering" can be abused by sinners in a Baal religious system of salvation as well as used correctly as Jesus prescribed. Notice the concept of the sin-offering is based on mercy, grace and forgiveness. Atonement was not guarenteed simply because one made a sacrifice to the living GOD. The sinner had to come before GOD with the offering in feelings of attitude as well as processing the actions required for making a sin-offering.
